In 2026, we celebrate 10 years of Field of Light – one of Australia’s most iconic and unforgettable light art experiences.
What began as a moment of inspiration became a global phenomenon. In 1992, artist Bruce Munro visited Uluru and felt an extraordinary energy rising from the land. “I felt so alive. It was in the air, on the ground, and coming through my body.” That feeling stayed with him, inspiring a vision of light blooming across the desert, much like native wildflowers emerging after rain.
Originally conceived as a temporary installation, Bruce Munro's vision was realised in 2016, when Field of Light was gently installed on Anangu country – a landscape that has held story, spirit and light for tens of thousands of years.
Since then, more than 750,000 visitors from around the around the world have walked amongst the lights, sharing moments of awe, stillness and connection.
Each night, more than 50,000 glowing spheres gently awaken from the earth, shifting through tones of ochre, violet, blue, and soft white. Beneath the star studded sky and against the mesmerising backdrop of Uluru's silhouette, the lights sway gently in the desert air, creating an experience that is immersive, meditative and deeply moving.
Field of Light is where nature, culture, and contemporary art meet. The lights cover an area larger than seven football fields and are powered entirely by the sun.
Ten years on, and the Field of Light continues to transform the desert into a living canvas, inviting people to slow down, walk gently, and experience a conversation between light and land, modern imagination, and ancient culture.

Celebrating Field of Light Beyond the Desert
To celebrate 10 years of Field of Light, a mural has been created in collaboration with Anangu artist Valerie Brumby and Wurundjeri muralist Alex Kerr.
Inspired by Bruce Munro's iconic installation set in the heart of Australia, the mural brings the spirit of the Field of Light into the city.
You can view the mural in Melbourne, at the corner of Swan and Carroll Streets, Richmond, until mid-April 2026.
