Full Day West MacDonnell Ranges Tours - AAT Kings

West MacDonnell Ranges

West MacDonnell Ranges

Stretching 400km, the West MacDonnell Ranges is one of Central Australia's natural treasures. Marvel at the superb scenery, such as the coloured walls of Angkerie (Standley Chasm). Visit only the Ranges on a half day tour or combine them with a visit to the Omniston and Glen Helen Gorges or a stop at Alice Springs Desert Park on a full day tour.

West MacDonell Ranges

Travel west from Alice Springs following the spectacular West MacDonnell Ranges. Pass the John Flynn Memorial (founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service). Our first stop is at Simpsons Gap with its beautiful red gums. Then we visit the Ochre Pits, which has been used for generations by the local Aboriginal people as a mine for the colourful mineral ochre. It occurs in a range of earthy colours and is the raw material for paintings and ceremonial body decoration. Continue to majestic Angkerle (Standley Chasm). Walk along the stony watercourse lined with cycads, ghost gums, cypress pines and acacias.

Ormiston and Glen Helen Gorges

Travel to Ellery Creek Big Hole before arriving at Ormiston Gorge. We travel on to Glen Helen Gorge, a semi permanent waterhole. Enjoy a Ploughman's lunch with fresh damper. Depending on the time of the year a refreshing swim may be possible at one of the waterholes. Nearby is the Mt. Sonder lookout. This beautiful mountain was the subject of many paintings by the famed Aboriginal artist and Arrernte tribesman, the late Albert Namatjira.

Alice Springs Desert Park

In the afternoon, visit the Alice Springs Desert Park. This superb park showcases the unique Australian wildlife of the Red Centre. See diverse and spectacular landscapes and learn about the adaptations of hundreds of species of desert flora and fauna. Watch the free-flying birds of prey demonstrate their survival skills, enjoy a close encounter with rare and elusive wildlife in the Nocturnal House, or discover the sensitive insights into Aboriginal culture and traditional use of deserts' resources including bush foods and medicines.

Then return to Alice Springs by transfer.
