"Restricted to many, this genuine Australian outback tour is a special way to experience the rugged beauty of Central Australia"

This Discovery Ecotours tour is a very special way to encounter the rugged beauty of the outback. We travel to Mount Conner, the third of the great rock formations of the Central Australian desert, 100 kms east of Uluru and on the western fringe of a huge, working cattle station, Curtin Springs.

As the tour follows the station's four wheel drive tracks, you'll discover the vast salt lakes that are remnants of ancient inland oceans, and examine fossilised remains of the oldest life forms on earth.

Circling Mount Conner, you'll be surprised by its hidden side - a haven for small populations of red kangaroos and rock wallabies. Because of the dams built for watering cattle, wildlife is more prevalent here than elsewhere in the Red Centre. The 4WD grinds and bounces its way to a high lookout, where you can gaze over the endless desert on into South Australia.

Before the sun sets we reach the ruins of the first homestead. A hole in the sand hills and a pile of sandstone chimney blocks are all that remain, in what seems like the loneliest place in the world. With Mount Conner in the background, we toast the sunset with complimentary sparkling wine and wonder how lonely, yet splendid, it would have been to live in such a place. As night gathers we drive on to Curtin Springs, where in the kitchen built from parts of the old homestead, we enjoy a three-course dinner prepared by the station cook, before returning to Ayers Rock Resort.
