Hiring a car is a great way to explore Central Australia on your own schedule. All major national car hire companies operate out of Alice Springs. Flying into Alice Springs and hiring a car to drive to Ayers Rock Resort is a great option for families and groups of friends, and is often more affordable. Alice Springs to Ayers Rock Resort is 450km, approximately 4.5 hours drive on sealed roads. There is also the option of driving via Kings Canyon, with is 306km (3.5 hour drive) from Ayers Rock Resort.
